Episode 13: Chic African Muslima

Chic African Muslimah

Chic Modest Muslimah

Prior to embracing my faith wholeheartedly (may Allah take easy account for me) I did not associate a Muslimah with chic modern, modest attire. I am very pleased with clothing companies like Modanisa, Haute Hijab, Zara, Artizara, Niswa and yes Amazon for transforming modest Muslim attire into something chic that I absolutely love. When I initially embarked upon this modest journey I struggled to find the right clothes that conformed with my religion, but also didn’t make me feel old. I am certain every Muslimah faces this dilemma somewhere in their journey, but don’t fret because once you connect with the right companies, it all becomes a fun, inexpensive or luxurious ease. But the choice is yours and definitely depends on how fancy or casual you’d like to go.

Outwardly embracing your faith as a Muslimah does not have to be a difficult process, but it first starts with the intention. Some of us find it easy to wear the hijab while others struggle with fitting in, or worry about being accepted or quite frankly being judged. I would surmise that that concern is common and understandable, but never forget why you made the intention to begin with. As Muslimahs our faith and striving in the path of Allah should guide our intentions and decisions and as long as you keep that uppermost in your mind, then the rest should be easy. While we juggle this worldly life, always remember that everything we do should be in accordance with the Quran and the sunnah.

Being a hijabi, has been rewarding for me as I have stepped out of the shadows of being a Muslimah and the best feeling in the world is when another Muslim, sees me and automatically greets me with “ As Salam Alaikum Sister.” The reward we both get from that short exchange of a sadaqah is fulfilling and inspiring. I didn’t choose this Journey of faith, Allah made it possible for me when He tried me with the loss of my father. This dunya is filled with trials and tribulations and Allah guides whom He wills. I pray that I use the knowledge I gain everyday throughout this Journey of faith wisely and share it with others to serve as an inspiration to all those who doubt that to work at the White House or any place of importance requires you to refrain from outwardly embracing your faith as a Muslim. I offered prayers at work, observed Ramadan while traveling with the Vice President of the United States all around the world, made dhikr with my tasbih and proudly wore my hijab.

Allah willed the passing of my father to unveil my eyes in order to embrace my faith and since April 2019, I have embarked upon this Journey and I pray for Allah’s steadfastness in this dunya. The dunya is filled with busyness, but don’t let it distract you from the remembrance of Allah, the Quran or the sunnah.

May Allah make us of those that strive in the dunya for the akhirah!

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Sister Khadijah Jalloh was born and raised in Sierra Leone and immigrated to the US 17 years ago.She is a Muslimah,  mother of 4 and a registered nurse for the last 14 years. She enjoys caring for others and has worked in medical surgical units to home health, Palliative and Hospice care. She is currently an adjunct faculty at a college of nursing. Her new passion in healthcare is understanding hypertension management in Sierra Leone.  When she is not working or fulfilling family obligations, she is busy planning and sharing her next outfit. She loves photos and fashion and spends her leisure time exploring all things fashion in the modest fashion industry and creating content to share for fun. She shares modest fashion styles on Instagram and Facebook as a way to connect with other hijabis in the diaspora and back home in Sierra Leone. Khadijah is very unique in the sense that she is not afraid to try non-conventional styles. She has always had a love for fashion, so it was only natural when she transitioned to being a hijabi, that her fashion sense did not change, only her way of expressing it did.
